170101 PM David’s Charge to Solomon
David’s
Charge to Solomon Just as Israel was about to receive a new King in 1 Chronicles 28 , we are ready to begin anew on many fronts today. As a nation, as a congregation, and probably in our own personal lives, a new start is best accomplished with a defined sense of direction and a committed purpose. David reminds his son Solomon, of the essential things that will define his kingdom and his service before the sovereign God that will either keep him in His care, or cast him off forever ( 1 Chron.28:9b) . David’s charge to his son is still so relevant to us today. (1 Chron. 28:9 ) 1.) Know the God of Your Father a. New creations, transformed lives, and committed disciples have more than a passing knowledge of their God (Rom. 1:21 – 23; Jer. 9:23 – 24 ) b. We truly know Him by seeing what He has actually done (Matt.7:15 – 17; Phil.3:10, 2:7 – 8; 1 John 4:10; Rom. 5:8 – 9 ) c. Will I draw close this year, will I truly know Him? (1 John 2:3 – 4; 2 Cor.5:14 – 15; Psa. 25:4 – 5) 2.) Serving with a Loyal Heart and Willing Mind a. This can only be possible if we really want the right kind of heart (Ps.139:23 – 24; Ps.51:10 – 11; Prov.21:2; Ps.73:1 ) b. Creating a willing mind and heart means shedding pride, sin, and living in God’s word (Jer.23:24; Prov.13:10; Heb.3:13; Ps.66:18; Heb. 4:12; Ps.51:17 ) c. Loyalty comes from maintaining the heart that was willing to yield. (Prov.4:23; Matt. 12:35; Ps.101:1 – 4 ) Our character begins in our hearts 3.) God Searches and Understands our Hearts and Thoughts a. David knew well that God looks within ( 1 Sam.16:7; Jer.17:9 – 10 ) b. God knows who will truly honor Him and who will only speak empty words (Ps.44:21; Jer.12:3; Gen. 6:5; 1 Pet.3:15 ) 4.) Just as Solomon was told, seek God and He will find us a. There is a blessing that awaits those who commit to their Father (Ps.119:2; Jer. 29:13) b. There is a judgment that is coming – we can all take David’s advice to Solomon (Rom.14:11 – 12; 2 Cor. 5:10 ) |
